What is a Business Listing?

Business Listing is your free Business Profile on Google. It helps your business show up when it matters most. For example, customers search for businesses, products, or services like yours on Google Search and Maps.

Also, your Business Profile account shows your address, phone number, website, open hours, and more. Customers can thus find and connect with your business. You can update your profile with fresh photos, special offers, and promotions. This makes it easy for customers to choose you.

Business Profile encompasses what you know as Google Places for Business, Google Listings, and Google+ Business Pages. Your Business Profile gives you a presence on Google Search and Maps. You can respond to reviews, post photos of products or special offers, and add/edit your business details.

Business Listing Terminologies

Google Account: This is the free account you create with Google. With this, you can access Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Photos, Gmail, and more. You be calling it your “Gmail account,” but Gmail is just one of the features.

Actually, you can use any email to set up a Google Account. Here, we will use the term “standard Google Account” to refer to this account type. I am sure you already have two standard Google accounts—personal and business.

 Business Profile:

This is your free business listing on Google. It is what appears on Google Maps and the local results of Google Search. Your business profile also appears on the right-hand Knowledge Panel of Google Search.

Google My Business account: This is also a free account that you create. It gives you a dashboard to manage and enhance your Business Profile.

How to Verify your Business on Google

You now know what a business listing on Google is and some terminologies. So, let us consider how to verify your business on Google. We will put the pieces together to form a full picture of the process.

Note that the goal is to gain full access to your Business Profile on Google. To do this, you need your Google My Business account. You sign up for this account using a standard Google Account.

However, the steps to complete the process are as follows:

  • Make sure you have a standard Google Account for your business.
  • Ensure you have a Business Profile.
  • Create a Google My Business account.
  • Request to claim your Business Profile.
  • Verify ownership of your business.

Following these steps will help you successfully claim and verify your business on Google. The steps are in the proper order to go. Though, in some cases, you will need to skip a step. To understand the entire process, carefully read the explanation of each step below.

 Step 1: Make sure you have a Google Account for your business

This is your standard Google Account. If you already have one (not your personal-use Google Account), skip to Step 2. But If you do not have a Google Account for your business, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to
  2. Click “Create an account.”
  3. Follow the drop-down with two options, and choose “To manage my business.”
  4. Supply the necessary information.

 Step 2: Ensure you have a Business Profile.

Your Business Profile is Google’s official term for your business listing. Remember, Google Business Profile is separate from Google My Business accounts. A Business Profile can exist independently without you having a Google My Business account.

However, the problem is that the business owner has no control over the information in that Business Profile. To have control, you must claim it through Google My Business. What is the point? Ensure you have a Business Profile to claim once you set up your Google My Business account.

If you already have a Business Profile, skip down to Step 4. If you do not have one or are unsure, then follow the steps below:

  1. Go to
  2. Search your business name.
  3. Your business name appears in the drop-down with an address next to it. This means your Business Profile already exists. Nice! Just move on to Step 4.
  4. If your business name does not appear with an address, select it. Then select “Add a missing place”.
  5. Provide all requested information. You will notice that you can claim the business within that same window. But you do not have a Google My Business account yet. So you will need to move on to Step 3.

However, if you already have a Google My Business account, follow the prompts. And that takes you to Step 5! Note that even if you did not create it, your Business Profile might already exist. This is because a Business Profile is simply a place on Google Maps, which any person or computer can add.

Step 3: Sign up for a Google My Business account

To claim your Business Profile on Google, you need to sign up for a Google My Business account. This is through your standard Google account (see Step 1). Below are the steps to sign up for a Google My Business account:

  1. Make sure you are logged into your standard Google Account (for business).
  2. Go to
  3. Select “Manage now.”
  4. Provide all the information Google asks for, such as business name, address; website; phone number, category, etc.

Additionally, more fields will open up in your dashboard by connecting this account with your Business Profile. This allows you to provide more information about your business. Such information is key to optimizing your business for local SEO. It also helps you to attract more customers through your free listing.

Step 4: Request to claim your Business Profile

The big question that needs to be answered now is: how do you claim your business profile? Note that having a Google My Business account does not automatically connect it to your existing Business Profile. You will have to tell Google to connect both of them.

Moreover, requesting to claim your Business Profile is by verifying ownership of your business. To do this, you must first locate your business profile on Google Map or Google Search. Then you will request to claim it.

Here are two ways you can do this:

 First Claim request method: Google Search

  1. Go to and search for your business name and location. Does your Business Profile appear on the right-hand side? If yes, find the “Own this business?” option and select it.
  2. A new screen is shown that says: “Manage this business so you can reply to reviews, update information, and more.
  3. Click “Manage now” and follow the prompts to claim your business. Remember to make sure you are logged in with the standard Google Account used for your business.

 Second Claim request method: Google Maps

  1. Go to, and type in your business name.
  2. Click on your Business Profile, and it will expand to show the option: “Claim this business.”
  3. Then click on “Claim this business” to overlay the same screen you saw in the first method, right over the map.
  4. Click “Manage now” and follow the prompts.

Step #6: Verify ownership of your business

In step 5 above, you are to click on “Manage now.”Once you do that, you will provide information proving you are the rightful owner of the business. This step is the last in getting your business listing on Google.

However, if you created the Business Profile and logged into your Google My Business account, you may get validated on the spot. But, if you did not create the Business Profile, Google will send you a verification code that you can enter into your Google Business dashboard. Depending on your industry, you may get your verification code via regular mail, email, or text.

In addition, after receiving the code, enter it into the box on the dashboard. You will then have full ownership of your Business Listing on Google. This allows you to manage reviews, update information, add more attractive details, and optimize it for successful marketing.
